How Can I Use an MLS?

Professionals in many different industries can advance their careers by gaining fundamental legal knowledge from a Master of Legal Studies. In our program, students first examine the basic tenets and procedures of the U.S. legal system, and then have the opportunity to customize their curriculum with a range of electives — such as Health Law, Corporate Compliance, Intellectual Property and Civil Procedure. Here are a few examples of how these courses might be used on the job:

  • Contracts and Negotiation: These courses equip students with a comprehensive understanding of employment contracts, loans and credit, and the ability to draft agreements and arbitrate effectively — skills that can be critical for professionals like business executives, real estate agents and social workers.

  • Health Law: In this course, students will learn about topics such as the Affordable Care Act; private, state and federal regulation of the health care system; and the provider-patient relationship. This in-depth knowledge of health-care law is helpful for a variety of health care-related jobs in order to provide quality care and train staff effectively.

  • Corporate Compliance: This course examines what motivates corporate misconduct, theories of regulatory enforcement and what punishments will result. This is important background for investors, entrepreneurs and politicians in order to conduct business safely and protect themselves.

Students in the MLS program can choose to focus their studies in one of our five concentrations: Business Law, Conflict Resolution, Litigation, Regulatory Compliance, and Employment Law. Concentrations allow you to specialize in a particular area of law and customize your degree to your professional interests.
